Muskegon River Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – December 14, 2016

Dennis with a nice Muskegon river steelhead.
The Muskegon river is running a bit below average flows at this time, after an odd and drastic drop and subsequent rise in river levels today.
We’re still fishing for early winter steelhead…..or rather we WERE until this arctic blast came upon us and pretty much shut down several boat ramps that are no longer available to launch from, but primarily just nasty weather to fish in.
We did get out before the onset of this the other day and had some good fishing for both steelhead and resident Brown and Rainbow trout.
With very cold weather here for a week or so, I’ve opted to re-schedule many guide trips as it’s simply not worth it at this point and on the verge of being unsafe if you’re not dressed appropriately. We’ll have winter steelhead fishing through January and February, it’s just a matter of finding breaks in the weather to get out for a few hours on a calm winter day in west Michigan.
Pending river conditions over the next month, we may see enough winter insect activity to bring resident Brown and Rainbow trout to the surface to sip #18-22 midges that are emerging….what fun when it happens in the dead of winter !!!
Many peoples thoughts are obviously shifting to plans for fishing the spring steelhead run on the Muskegon river, which goes from mid March – mid May. I’ve been getting many calls and emails about spring and as a result, have over half of my spring schedule already booked.
Feel free to call with any questions.
Water conditions will likely stay around or a bit below average flows over the next few weeks and run very clear, unless we get an unplanned thaw, but that’s not likely.
Present water temperature in the 39-40 degree range.
