Muskegon River Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – April 7, 2016

Muskegon river steelhead

Art, from west Michigan, with a “snub nose” steelhead…… despite the deformity, GREAT fight…it jumped once right after being hooked, again as we chased it down and a third time…INTO the boat !

The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is still running above average flows at this time and ‘ol man winter just won’t let go !!!  With moderate to heavy snowfall throughout the day today, we continue to get more precipitation that will continue to keep river levels up for a while.

Jack with a nice and very acrobatic Muskegon river steelhead.

With both fly fishing and light spin tackle setups, we’re fishing to pre-spawn steelhead in pools and runs around spawning grounds.  Some fish are spawning, but with water temperatures having dropped over the last few days, this will delay real active spawning for several days.

Art, with a FAST Muskegon river steelhead!

Today was a mix of nicely colored up steelhead that have been in the river for a while, along with bright chrome fish fresh out of lake Michigan.

Present water temperature hovering around the 41 degree mark.
