Muskegon River Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – April 17, 2016

Dan, with son Blake, from SE Michigan, with a beautiful Muskegon river steelhead from their 2 day outing……8 years in a row and counting !
The Muskegon river in the Newaygo, MI area is still running above average flows for this time of mid April, but coming down in levels and up in temperature. This will likely continue as we have no rain in the forecast for the next week+.
We are into our spring steelhead run on the Muskegon river and getting fish with both fly fishing and light spin tackle equipment. Fishing riffles, runs and pools throughout the course of the day, we’re catching pre spawn “staging” fish and post spawn “drop backs” for the most part, however some of these are also holding very close to spawning grounds.

Blake and I, with one of several steelhead he tangled with today.
With water temperatures having broken that critical 45 degree mark just the other day, fish are getting in quick, getting “business” taken care of an high tailing it back to lake Michigan !!
With such migratory fish, we go through cycles when fish thin out for a bit until new ones arrive from lake Michigan to take their place.
Present water temperature in the 46-47 degree range.
