Muskegon River Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – April 11, 2016

John, from west Michigan, with a very energetic Muskegon river steelhead from today.
The Muskegon river north of Grand Rapids, MI is still running above average flows at this time due to the rain and snow that has “frequented” west Michigan a few times over the past week+. The river did come down a little today, but it’s still running high and slightly off color.
We are into our spring steelhead run on the Muskegon river and finding fish to play with each day with both fly fishing and light spin tackle gear. Some fish are moving up near or onto spawning grounds, while others are “staging” in pools and runs not far off.
With water temperatures having tapered off around the 41-42 degree mark the last several days, the heart of the spawning season has yet to come.
With mild weather in the long range forecast, we should see water temperatures jump up and things really kick into high gear here in the near future.
Water temperature today was 41 for most of the day, but did hit 42 mid afternoon.
