Muskegon River Fishing Report – May 5, 2018 – Newaygo, Michigan

Muskegon River Steelhead and Trout fishing

Arie looks on and gives dad Chris a “steelhead salute”, as he holds young Arie’s beautiful and large Muskegon river steelhead. It was his cast, drift, hook, fight and land…with some help from my one hand helping him hold the fishing rod up, but he did the rest !…..nicely done Arie !

I’m long overdue for an updated fishing report and some great pictures of spring steelhead caught on the Muskegon river in the Newaygo, Michigan area over the last week or so.

We’ve had a mixed bag of weather for the most part this “spring”, including the most recent round of heavy rains and high winds that took over much of the Midwest.

With those rains, came a rise in water levels on the river and more steelhead coming in from lake Michigan on their annual spawning run.

Maralynn with a great Muskegon river steelhead from their annual outing here to west Michigan in mid April.

Not to be left out are the resident Brown and Rainbow trout that we’re catching behind spawning steelhead.    They’re eager to get in on the easy meal of eggs and insects that get kicked up down stream for the steelhead and some nice ones are being caught !

With both fly fishing and light spin tackle equipment, we’re fishing for primarily steelhead, but have other equipment on board when the situation and/or conditions look to try for trout when any dry fly fishing opportunities arise.

Present water levels are high, but will likely change in the next 12-24 hours as water from the rains comes down the Muskegon river watershed.

Present water temperature is around 50.
