Muskegon River Fishing Report – May 30, 2017 – Newaygo, MI

Muskegon river trout fishing

The Muskegon river fishing report for May 30, 2017, for the Newaygo, MI area is about insect  hatches and dry fly fishing for resident Rainbow and Brown trout.

We are into the heart of “hatch season” on the Muskegon river and have some good hatches going on each day, which are bringing trout to the surface for the best dry fly fishing of the year !  This will go on for a couple few weeks as June is historically our month for hatch activity on the Muskegon.

We are fishing pre-hatch trout with wet flies and small streamers.  Both can fish fished on light sink tips or long leaders with a small split shot 2-3′ above the fly.

As we get into the onset of our “summer” season, river temperatures will slowly rise, river levels may drop and we should see a pretty good “schedule” of hatches.  It all starts with #16  Cinnamon Caddis, along with #14 and #18 Sulphurs, #12 Gray Drakes, #12 Brown Drakes and #12 Isonycnia’s.  On cloudy days, best to have #16 and #18 BWO’s on hand as well…..never can tell with the trout will key in on those and they can be very prevalent on certain days.

Once we get into the warmer months July and August, it will all be about Smallmouth Bass, the occasional Northern Pike and even a Walleye here and there.   All can be caught on conventional gear such as baitcaster or open face spinning rigs, most can be caught on fly gear as well.

With a pretty mild forecast this week, we should see river conditions stay pretty much the same as we get into June.

Present water temperature in the 59-60 degree range.
