Muskegon River Fishing Report – May 28, 2018 – Newaygo, Michigan

Chunky Muskegon river trout are coming to the surface for dry flies !!!
The Muskegon river fishing report for May 28, 2018 in the Newaygo, Michigan area is focused on the arrival of Prime Time Dry Fly fishing !
With river levels having finally come down to near “normal” flows in recent days and water temperatures getting into the low 60’s, we’re seeing the onset of what will be our biggest hatches of this early summer trout fishing season.
Both resident Brown and Rainbow trout are keying in on mid day insects that are in the process of emerging into flying bugs, which will happen throughout the day and find peak hatch activity late afternoon and early evening.
With 4-6 weight fly rods, we’re fishing sub surface during the day and “following” the hatch up the water column. Starting with nymphs fished at or near the bottom, we switch to actively moving nymph patterns mid afternoon and then “emerger” patterns such as Caddis and Suphurs late afternoon and then focus on Gray Drakes evening – dusk.
Present water levels back near normal, click on THIS link for up to date water flow data and water temperature information.
With our forecast calling for some more reasonable day and night time air temperature than the low 90’s we’re seeing over the holiday weekend, we should continue to see bugs come off each day for a few weeks. Click HERE for updated weather forecast.
