Muskegon River Fishing Report – May 12, 2020 – Newaygo, Michigan

A nice and “chunky” Muskegon river Rainbow trout taken on a wet fly yesterday.

The Muskegon river fishing report for May 12, 2020 in the Newaygo, Michigan area is about the change of “seasons” on the river and pursuit of resident Rainbow and Brown trout as we get into the best dry fly fishing of the year !!!

With our spring steelhead run coming to an end, it marks the onset of the most anticipated time of the year for many fly fishers…..dry flies !

As river temperatures warm a bit more we will see the first of our May – June hatches kick off, starting with Caddis, then into Suphurs, followed by Gray Drakes, Isonychia’s and some Blue Winged Olives here and there on cloudy days and we should have a good month of topwater action for trout.

This cycle of insect emergence is closely tied to river temperatures and with the unusual fluctuations in those as of late due to colder than average air temperatures, mother nature is a bit behind schedule.  Click HERE for current and forecasted weather for the Newaygo, Michigan area to see what lies ahead on the weather front.

Water levels on the Muskegon river have dropped considerably over the past couple of days and this, coupled with warmer weather in the near future, will bring river temperatures up and kick of the barrage of bugs !  Click HERE for current Muskegon river water flow data out of Croton dam.

Present water temperature is in the 50-51 degree range, but this will be changing soon !
