Muskegon River Fishing Report – March 21, 2017 – Newaygo, MI

Steve holds a beautiful, colored up male steelhead from today that took us a looooonnngg way down river before coming to the net.

The Muskegon river fishing report for March 21, 2017 in the Newaygo, MI area is all about the spring STEELHEAD run that we’re into now.

With water temperatures sllllooooowwwllly rising to near that magical 40 degree mark, we’re seeing new steelhead come into the river from lake Michigan on their annual spawning run.

We’re fishing both fly fishing and light spin tackle setups to catch pre-spawn, “staging” fish in the pools and runs they occupy this time of early spring.

With water levels having already peaked from the late snow melt, runoff and rains in February, we will be relying on Mother Nature to lend a hand with some rains over the next month to keep river levels up to where they should be this time of year.    Historically rising at this time of late March, water levels have actually dropped over the past few days and we’re below “average” for March 21.
