Muskegon River Fishing Report – March 12, 2017 – Newaygo, MI

Alex holds a nice steelhead caught while fishing with his dad Mike.
The Muskegon river fishing report for March 12, 2017 is about the return of “winter” like weather, at least air temperatures that is, which has dropped water temperatures in recent days.
After having a downright balmy February and mild very beginning of March, it looks as though ‘ol man winter has come back with snow forecasted in the days ahead and a winter weather advisory to boot.
With such odd fluctuations in air and river temperatures over the last few weeks, as well as higher than average water, much sooner in our early “spring season” than normal, fish are understandably confused !……so are many anglers fishing for them !
That said, we do have both the last of our “winter” steelhead in the river, as well as some new ones fresh out of lake Michigan, but I imagine that they will put the breaks on their spawn for a bit due to dropping river temperatures the last few days.
With both fly fishing and light spin tackle, we’re focusing our efforts on fishing winter runs and will be for several days before water temperatures have a chance to begin climbing. Trout were getting more active and even had one chase down a streamer the other day, but this too will slow down a bit.
Present water temperature in the 35-36 degree range.
