The Muskegon river fishing report for March 10, 2021 in the Newaygo, Michigan area is about the onset of the annual spring steelhead run.

With some extended warmer weather arriving in west Michigan a bit earlier than normal, we’re seeing a lot of snow melt, runoff and the beginning of rising river levels.  How quickly the river comes up in flows will depend on how fast the ice melts in the reservoirs above Croton dam, which include the Rogers, Hardy and Croton impoundments.   Based on our current weather, this may be accelerated a bit this spring.  Click HERE for current and forecasted weather for the Newaygo, Michigan area.

River levels did rise a bit today when I was out and it may continue to come up with the very warm weather throughout much of the Midwest in recent days.  As river levels rise, we should see a gradual increase in water temperatures, as it’s still quite cold, with my readings today being in the 35-36 degree range.  Click HERE for current Muskegon river water flow data.

With both fly fishing and conventional equipment, I will be targeting pre-spawn steelhead in the days-weeks to come and we should see a good push of steelhead out of lake Michigan and into the river, in the next week-10 days based on present river and weather conditions.  We have had some “new fish” arrive recently, but it has been more of a trickle of them -vs- larger groups coming up, which is pretty normal based on river temperatures.

There are some Walleye coming in as well on their annual spawning run, we found one that was willing to bite today.

Good fishing….
