Muskegon River Fishing Report – June 5, 2016

Muskegon river Rainbow Trout

Thomas, from W. Viirginia, and the nice Muskegon river Rainbow trout he caught on a wet fly while fishing with his dad.

The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is presently running near average flows for this time of early summer.  After having come down on a consistent basis over the last several days, water levels rose a little  bit overnight.  Heavy rains that came through most of west and central Michigan in the last 12 hours will likely bring the river up a little more in the next day or so.

We are in the heart of our dry fly fishing season on the Muskegon river and this will continue for another couple weeks.  Starting with mid to late afternoon Caddis, followed by Sulphurs and then Gray Drakes around dusk.  Some nice fishing are coming to the surface to feed during heavy emergence and/or spinner fall.

When dry fly activity is low, we’re also catching resident Rainbow and Brown trout on indicator nymphing setups and swinging wet flies with sink tips.

With some cool weather in the forecast through the middle of next week, we may see water temperatures taper off.

Present water temperature is in the 63-64 degree range.
