Muskegon River Fishing Report – June 4, 2016

Muskegon river Brown trout

Mark, from west MI, with a very nice Brown trout taken on a dry fly yesterday on the Muskegon river.

The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is running below average levels at this time and we’re badly in need of rain !!  The levels had been holding nicely over the last few weeks, despite limited precipitation, but all good things cannot last forever, especially when it’s Mother Nature.

We are in the heart of our dry fly season for resident Rainbow and Brown trout on the Muskegon river, with several hatches taking place throughout the day.  Starting with cinnamon Caddis, followed by Sulphurs and finally Gray Drakes around dusk, we have bugs to bring the trout to the surface !

When dry flies aren’t an option, we’re going subsurface with either indicator nymphing rigs, or by swinging wet flies with sink tip lines.  The streamer bite has been fair at best the last week+, but some fish are still falling to small baitfish patterns, fished in softer water near the main current.

Present water temperature in the 63-64 degree range.
