Muskegon River Fishing Report – June 28, 2017 – Newaygo, MI

A stout Muskegon river Smallmouth bass that put up quite the battle, breaking water several times during the “fight”…
The Muskegon river in the Newaygo, MI area is running above average flows for the last week of June due to the heavy rains that came through most of Michigan this past week and weekend. Present flows around 2300 cfs, average for this time in the 1700 range, but much better than the 3500 cfs we saw in the last 36 hours.
The rains, coupled with cooler than average air temperatures, has brought river temperatures down to the mid 60’s in the Newaygo area, low 60’s up by Croton dam, after having been up around the 70 degree mark for several days a week+ ago.
This has put our “summer” season on a delay of sorts, as we’re used to seeing a little lower water levels and water temperatures in the mid to upper 60’s by now, but this will change with our next stretch of warm weather.
I have seen some trout rising to dry flies here and there over the last few days, but they have been selective in what they’re feeding on and if you have the right fly, they will bite…..but if not, forget it !
Smallmouth bass fishing was getting much better in the days prior to the big jump in water level and will resume once things settle down.
I’ve been fishing with both fly fishing and light spin tackle equipment in recent trips and it has been all a matter of personal preference and weather conditions as to which one to fish on any given day.
Water temperature today was in the 65 degree range in the Newaygo area.
