Muskegon River Fishing Report – June 22, 2021 – Newaygo, Michigan

This is Carter’s first Rainbow trout caught fly fishing ! He joined his dad Tim for a morning outing and managed to catch quite a few quality Muskegon river trout on dry flies.

The Muskegon river fishing report for June 22, 2021 in the Newaygo, Michigan area is still focused on the current low water conditions of the river and “what” fishing opportunities it is providing at this time.  The last week+ has been a blessing for all Michigan rivers and lakes, as we’ve finally gotten some rain, but along with it some cooler air temperatures that have stalled the rapidly rising water temperatures.

Although not a LOT of water came from the recent rounds of weather to have come through Michigan, it was enough bring some rivers up a little, but more importantly bring river temperatures down from 70+, to the mid 60’s.  Click HERE for current Muskegon river water flow data.

We “had” been at what looked like the tail end of our trout fishing on the Muskegon river for the summer prior to last week+, but that has changed a bit.  We’re still not seeing BIG hatches, but there are enough bugs out and about, to have resident Brown and Rainbow trout “looking up” for dry flies.

When not in pursuit of trout, the Smallmouth bass fishing has been rather good.  With both fly fishing and conventional equipment, we have fished both topwater and subsurface flies and lures, to entice some of the nicer “smally’s that I’ve seen in recent years, for this time of June.

With some mild and wet weather headed our way over the next week+, we should see river conditions remain favorable for more trout fishing through the end of the month and even possibly into early July.  Click HERE for current and forecasted weather for the Newaygo, Michigan area.

As always, should anyone be looking to get out for a few hours of walk in/wade fishing on their own and would like a current report on river conditions or insect hatches, feel free to call – 616-560-3195.

For now…

Jeff
