Muskegon River Fishing Report – June 15, 2016

Muskegon River Smallmouth……FUN !!!

The Muskegon river north of Grand Rapids, MI is running around average flows for this time of mid June.  The heavy rains going through much of Michigan right now may bring water up a little in the days ahead.

We’re catching resident Brown and Rainbow trout with various techniques, from wet flies fished on long leaders or short sink tips, to small streamers fished in soft water, to afternoon dry fly opportunities with Caddis, Sulphurs, BWO, Gray Drake and Isonychia hatches. 

Smallmouth bass have showed up and this is a great time of year to fish them……still not “optimal” water temperature, but they’re fresh from Muskegon lake, hungry and haven’t seen a lot of flies or lures up to this point.  As water temperatures increase and insect activity decreases, Smallmouth will be the species of choice for several weeks.

With both topwater “poppers” and waking flies or lures, along with subsurface imitations of crayfish and various baitfish, the mighty “smally” provides some great fishing during the warm summer months in Michigan.

Present water temperature in the 64-65 degree range.
