Muskegon River Fishing Report – July 5, 2017 – Newaygo, MI

Muskegon river fishing

Capt. Eddie Adams, from Louisiana – www.louisianaredfishmaster.com – came up to visit family in west MI and got out today for some fishing on the Muskegon river. Pictured with a nice and chunky resident Rainbow trout, both them and Smallmouth bass were eager to play today !

The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is running a little above average flows at this time of early July, after having slowly come down after a series of heavy rains came through most of Michigan in the last week – 10 days.

We are into the heart of our summer season chasing Smallmouth bass, some resident Rainbow and Brown trout when conditions are right and the occasional run in with Walleye and Northern pike.

With both fly fishing and light spin tackle gear, we can fish both topwater poppers/waking flies-lures, as well as subsurface imitations of crayfish and baitfish to get into fish throughout the day.

There are still a few trout rising to #18-20 Trico’s first thing in the morning, for those looking to cast a dry fly to a rising trout.

Present water temperature in the 67-68 degree range.
