Muskegon River Fishing Report – July 31, 2018 – Newaygo, Michigan
The Muskegon river fishing report for July 31, 2018 in the Newaygo, Michigan area is focused on fishing for Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike and Walleye. It has been mostly Smallmouth recently, but we’re starting to pick up more Walleye randomly and the occasional Pike is showing itself as well.
With both fly fishing and light spin tackle equipment, we’re fishing the prime “lies” for all these fish, which can change a bit with fluctuations in river levels and temperature. To read a short article on summer fishing the Muskegon river, click HERE.
After several days of erratic flows the week before last, levels have tapered off and running closer to “normal” for the onset of August, which is around 1,100 cfs. For current river conditions, click HERE.
With some rains recently and more forecasted before the next heat wave comes through the end of this week, we may see levels go up just a bit more, which may allow for access to other sections of the Muskegon river that had not been reachable most of the summer due to low water.
With August on us already, many peoples thoughts shift to the arrival of lake Michigan salmon in rivers of west Michigan and the Pere Marquette has already gotten a small batch of “kings” over the last week+. With some BEASTS out in lake Michigan this summer, we’re sure to see some tackle busting salmon in the rivers this fall.
I will be doing lower river trips on the Pere Marquette starting in a few weeks and have about a dozen openings from the end of August – end of September. Contact me for more details – 616-560-3195.
There is still some real good fishing to be had on the Muskegon river in/around the Newaygo area, so keep that in mind as you plan your August fishing trips.
Present water levels on the Muskegon river in the 1,100 cfs range and present temperature in the 70-72 degree range.
