Muskegon River Fishing Report – July 27, 2017 – Newaygo, MI

Grand River Smallmouth bass fishing

A chunky Smallmouth bass….that acted like a Steelhead !

The Muskegon river is running a little above average flows at this time and reaching its warmest water temperature of the summer.  This means that warm water fish such as Smallmouth bass, Northern Pike and Walleye are actively feeding and we’re fishing for mostly Smallmouth bass, with outside shots at Pike and Walleye along the way.

There is an abundance of baitfish in the river right now, from last falls baby salmon, to fathead minnows, creek chubs, etc..   We’re matching these with flies and lures, so both fly fishing and conventional tackle setups are getting it done.

With no rain in the long range forecast, we can only anticipate that water levels will drop and good Smallmouth bass fishing will continue.

Present water temperature in the 73-74 degree range.
