Muskegon River Fishing Report – July 26, 2017 – Newaygo, MI

Uncle Phil took nephews Daniel, Matt and Jack fishing on the Muskegon river for their annual summer outing. Pictured is Phil with me holding one of several fish each of the boys caught during the outing.
The Muskegon river fishing report for July 26, 2017 for the Newaygo, MI area is about Smallmouth bass, Northern Pike and the occasional Walleye. Such warm water fish are the primary species to target during the “dog days of summer”. The resident Brown and Rainbow trout are still there, but fishing them in such water temperatures is not advised. They’re stressed as it is with water temperatures in the low 70’s and I simply don’t fish to them at this time of summer.
We’re using both fly fishing and light spin tackle equipment to pursue the other fish and have been fishing a LOT of different water over the last couple weeks. Both topwater poppers and waking flies/lures, as well as subsurface imitations of baitfish and crayfish are getting fishes attention.
The best time to get out is early morning or later in the afternoon. This puts us on the river either before of after a majority of the tubes/kayaks/canoes go through.
Fishing from my “jet sled” river boat provides great comfort, a LOT of casting room and the ability to cover a lot of water if necessary. Most fishing has been done in/around the Newaygo area, but we’ll often venture much further up river when conditions are right.
Present water temperature around the 72 degree mark.
