Muskegon River Fishing Report – July 22, 2017 – Newaygo, MI

Matt, here from KS on his annual vacation, got out with me again and found some nice, VERY chunky, Muskegon river Smallmouth bass to play with the other day.
The Muskegon river fishing report for July 22, 2017 in the Newaygo, MI area is about Smallmouth bass, as well as the occasional run in with Northern Pike and Walleye. We are officially into the “dog days of summer”, as water temperatures have risen to the 72-73 degree range and that’s prime Smally time !
With both fly fishing and light spin tackle equipment, we’re fishing both topwater poppers/waking flies and lures, as well as subsurface imitations of baitfish and crayfish. There are a LOT of baitfish around right now, so getting the right imitation on your line AND presenting it the right way, is a key to getting bites.
With our long range forecast being a bit cooler than normal for late July – highs in low 80’s and lows in the low/mid 60’s – we may see water temperatures come down just a bit over the next week or so.
Present water levels just a little above average at 1500 cfs and water temperatures around 73.
