Muskegon River Fishing Report – July 14, 2020 – Newaygo, Michigan
The Muskegon river fishing report for July 14, 2020 in and around the Newaygo, Michigan area is about the temporary return of more normal mid July weather over the last few days. After having gone through the Summer Sahara Blast of 2020, I hope our Michigan rivers and lakes don’t have to endure another round of such weather. Many Michigan and Midwest guides took on a self imposed ban on guiding for trout over our record setting run of 90+ degree days. It was great to hear that most are putting the resource in front of the al-mighty dollar. I understand that a select few did not participate, but one in particular has a history of putting himself above any and everything else, so that should not be a shocker.
With next to no rain over the last near month, all rivers are running low and clear. Some smaller rivers did come up a bit following a pretty good one day rain, but that water has all but flushed from every system. The Muskegon river has fallen below average flows for only the second time this summer. Click HERE for current Muskegon river water flow data.
Now that we’re into the “dog days of summer”, many anglers shift their focus to WHAT they can catch, based on what rivers and lakes are fishing best, for the species that interests them most. I prefer to leave trout alone after about the first week or two of July, aside from those rare years where we have cool enough weather over most summer months, to keep water temperatures conducive to trout fishing. For many though, a change to smallmouth bass and pike is a great shift of gears for 4-6 weeks of summer here in Michigan. Present flows on the Muskegon river are about 1200 cfs, with water temperatures ranging from 72-74.
