Muskegon River Fishing Report – July 13, 2022 – Newaygo, Michigan

The Muskegon river fishing report for July 13, 2022 in the Newaygo area focuses on the continued Smallmouth bass fishing, with an occasional appearance by a Northern pike and a Walleye here and there.

With both fly fishing and conventional equipment, we’re fishing various flies and lures to entice these feisty fish, which “pound for pound” fight about as good as most any freshwater fish.    Topwater and subsurface flies and lures have been working, when “fished” correctly.

Recreational traffic is at peak levels right now on all Michigan rivers, so picking the right time of day and/or section of river, is important to better ensure success.

We’ve been on various rivers over the last week, including the Pere Marquette, Grand and of course, Muskegon river.  As overall river conditions change, I will be fishing whatever river provides the best results, which could change again if we get much needed rains and change in river levels.

Not far off is the onset of early run Chinook salmon, which start on the lower Pere Marquette river late August/early September.  Much of my September schedule is full, there are some openings for Manistee river salmon trips in late September and early October.    Muskegon river salmon trips follow in latter October, as well as Muskegon river fall steelhead in November and December.  Should any be considering a fall outing, don’t wait too long to check on availability.
