Muskegon River

The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is running near average flows as we enter the first week of 2015 !

Fishing remains good for “winter” conditions for both resident Brown trout and Rainbow trout, as well as migratory Steelhead that have chosen to spend their winter of 2014-15, in the river.  We have not seen any lake run Brown trout in recent outings, but some may still be lingering about.

With water temperatures likely dropping to their coldest reading so far this coming week, fish will surely be settling into softer water lies, close to both current “seams” near main channels, troughs or runs, as well as nearby structure.

Slow, small and light is the name of the game come winter fishing.  By working slower runs, with smaller offerings, on lighter pound test line, we’re still able to tussle with trout and steelhead.   Since fish aren’t inclined to move much in such cold water, very methodical nymph fishing with the right combination of weight to get offerings down to the fishes level, as well as “stack mending” line to get the longest drag free drift possible, will make that indicator jump under water as fish take our very well tied imitations of nymphs and pupa, present the Muskegon river.

Both fly and light spin tackle gear are being used for both resident trout and steelhead.   It’s more a matter of what one wants out of their outing, based on both fishing AND catching preferences.

We will be offering the “winter special” through the end of February, which is a discounted half day trip, for up to 2 people, which includes all equipment, onboard heaters and soft beverages.  Call me at 616-560-3195 for more information or send an email when time provides.

Present water temperature in the 34-35 degree range.
