Muskegon River Fishing Report – January 26, 2015

Muskegon River

The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is running a bit below average flows for this time of winter, with levels around the 1700 cfs mark.

With fairly stable weather over the past week+, the river is in very good shape and giving up some nice steelhead and resident Brown and Rainbow trout. 

Small flies and lighter tippet are the theme for winter trout and the same can be said, for the most part, for steelhead that are wintering over in the river.

Whatever your pleasure is…….swinging or slow stripping streamers, light line indicator nymph fishing or EVEN casting #18-22 midge dry fly patterns on 7 and 8x tippet to trout rising for midge dry flies, ample options for the fly fishing enthusiast.   For those in search of steelhead, deep water nymphing rigs and bottom bouncing -aka chuck-n-duck- will get flies in front of steelhead.

Present water temperature still in the 34-35 degree range in the Croton-Newaygo area, colder down stream towards Muskegon itself.
