Muskegon River Fishing Report – January 10, 2020 – Newaygo, Michigan

Time to get the “all purpose” salt water fly box in order…..everything from shrimp to crabs, crazy charlies to gotcha’s and streamers of all kinds to boot !
The Muskegon river fishing report for early January is about the continued high water we’re seeing due to warmer than average weather, coupled with rain-snow mix, most of which has been melting shortly after it falls. Click HERE for current Muskegon river water flow data.
Steelhead fishing has been sketchy lately and with water temperatures at the coldest this winter, not likely that we’ll see many/any new steelhead come in from lake Michigan for a while. That said, there are some steelhead around the once river levels taper off and return to near normal flows, fishing for them will be more predictable.
Resident Brown and Rainbow trout are still a worthy alternative to steelhead, as they’re more accustomed to finding “lies” in high water and those holding spots are not hard to identify during the colder winter months.
Fly fishing and light spin tackle equipment are options for the steelhead angler, indicator nymphing with lighter fly rods are best for trout.
The next few days look to be a bit chilly, wet and windy with a new weather front coming into the Midwest today and projected to put freezing rain and snow on the ground in the next 24-36 hours. Click HERE for current and forecasted weather for the Newaygo, Michigan area.
Present flows in the 3,400 cfs range, with normal levels closer to 2,000 cfs. Current water temperature hovering around the 34 degree range.
