Muskegon River Fishing Report – February 9, 2018 – Newaygo, Michigan

Aaron, from west Michigan, with a nice Muskegon river winter steelhead from yesterday.
The Muskegon river fishing report for February 9, 2018 for the Newaygo, Michigan area is about winter steelhead and trout fishing.
As we settle into more typical early February weather, both resident Brown and Rainbow trout, as well as migratory steelhead that are “wintering over” in the river, are being found in the traditional “lies” that we’re used to seeing come mid winter. The very atypical weather that we’ve had over the last month+, which included significant fluctuations in river levels, had fishing moving around trying to find a comfortable place to hold in the river.
With both fly fishing and light spin tackle equipment, we can pursue both with the appropriate setups. By targeting the usual mid winter runs and pools that the fish occupy this time of year, finding fish willing to bite is a matter of working the runs well and covering water.
We have some pretty consistent weather in the short and long term forecast, so fishing should remain pretty good for winter conditions.
Present water temperature in the 34-35 degree range.
