Muskegon River Fishing Report – February 27, 2018 – Newaygo, Michigan

Muskegon river rainbow and brown trout fishing

Here fishy, fishy, fishy !
Tying up some “bugs” for hungry steelhead and trout to eat !

The Muskegon river fishing report for February 27, 2018 in the Newaygo, Michigan area is still about the high water levels as a result of the 2+ days of straight rain that came through Michigan and most of the Midwest last week.  The result was flooding on the Muskegon river, which prompted the closure of all boat ramps for several days.

Most Michigan rivers that were at “flood stage”, have now crested and are either stable or on their way down.  The Muskegon river crested a couple days ago, but is still running very high and dirty in color.

Once the upper Muskegon river between Big Rapids and the Evart area begins to drop, we should see a gradual decline in river levels and improving water clarity.   It appears to have dropped a bit yesterday, but we’ll have to wait and see if this is a continual downward trend.

Muskegon river water temperatures are still cold though, so we’ll need to see a rise in water temperatures over the next near week or so, in order to get decent numbers of steelhead to come into the Muskegon river from lake Michigan.

Present water temperature still in the 34-35 degree range.
