Muskegon River Fishing Report – February 16, 2017 – Newaygo, MI

Muskegon river steelhead

Steve, from SE Michigan, with a great Muskegon river steelhead from today’s outing.

The Muskegon river is back to running near average flows for this time of February, after having come up a week ago due to rains and related snow melt and runoff into the river.

Overall river conditions are still quite good for mid February.  This is historically a time of year when fishing can slow down and finding a “biter” can be tough, but fishing has been pretty good due to odd weather this winter.

With both fly fishing and light spin tackle setups, we’re finding steelhead and the occasional trout in their “winter lies”.  For those wanting to focus on trout, 5 weight rods with floating line, indicator and the right assortment of nymphs will get you into resident Rainbow and Brown trout.

With a very warm forecast for the next week or so, we should see river conditions change and this may bring more steelhead into the system from lake Michigan, as well as kick start the resident trout appetite !

Present water temperature hovering either side of 34 degrees.
