Muskegon River Fishing Report – February 15, 2021 – Newaygo, Michigan

Great winter colors on a Muskegon river steelhead.

The Muskegon river fishing report for February 15, 2021 in the Newaygo, Michigan area is……COLD !

With some record setting low temperatures coming through much of the northern United States, we’re seeing some bitter temperatures here in west Michigan, which has effectively shut down most all river fishing.  Yes, there is some open water in the upper Pere Marquette river, as well as the Muskegon below Croton dam  and the Manistee below Tippy dam.  That being said, it’s not the best idea to try walking into or launching a boat in, such cold conditions that can turn deadly with one mistake.

Once some warmer weather returns – end of next week – it will be feasible to get back out for some walk in-wade fishing, as well as fishing from boats.  With such cold temperatures, boat ramps can re-freeze in a matter of minutes, so any vessel being launched will likely have some water coming out of the trailer and once on the ramp…..it’ll get slick very quick !

River levels have settled at what looks to be our winter levels for the next month+, but this could change a bit with any warm up that results in some snow melt.  Click HERE for current Muskegon river water flow data.

Options for Muskegon river anglers include light line, indicator nymph fishing for both resident Rainbow and Brown trout, as well as steelhead that are wintering over in the river.

Best rigs for trout would include 9-10+ foot 5 & 6 weight rods, with leaders tapered down to 6x and for steelhead, similar length rods in 7 & 8 weights, with “to fly tippet” in the 6# range.

With some low 30’s air temperatures forecasted for the end of next week and weekend, it will provide a realistic opportunity to get back out on the river.  Click HERE for current and forecasted weather for the Newaygo, Michigan area.

Lastly, for those looking to spring and summer for possible guided steelhead and trout trips, know that my schedule is filling fast, with only a few open dates in March for steehead and late May/early June for prime time trout-dry fly fishing.

As always, if  any have questions about rivers, fishing spots, rigging or otherwise, feel free to call – 616-560-3195

Stay warm !!!
