Muskegon River Fishing Report – December 8, 2016 – Newaygo, MI

The Muskegon river is running around average flows for this time of early December and very clear throughout the system, from Croton dam to Muskegon itself.

Bill and Dan came over from Port Huron to fish for the day and found some Muskegon river fall steelhead to tangle with.
Bill holds very colorful male steelhead.

We are still chasing fall/early winter steelhead and finding some very nice fish, but having to work for them a lot harder on certain days….it’s all about “coverage” and “keep casting”….

Cold temperatures have come in with some force now and we’ll see them over the next few days.

Fishing was quite good yesterday and not so much today, as I believe the fish are also battling the drastic changes with this most recent weather pattern and should settle down once the blunt of it comes through in the next 24-48 hours.

As for technique this time of year, it’s all about what ones personal preference is for fly fishing or spin fishing, but multiple setups in each style are getting fish.

Present water temperature in the 40-41 degree range up and down the river.
