Muskegon River – Christmas Day Report

The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI came up considerably in levels yesterday due to the heavy rains that  came through most of Michigan the previous day and night.  The river is by no means “blown out”, but clipping pretty good at 3700+ CFS.    With this rise in water level AND not extremely cold water temperatures, we may see another push of fresh steelhead out of Muskegon lake and/or lake Michigan, into early January.

We’re still getting into some great fish, with the Crown Jewel of Great Lake Big Game fish still tugging on our lines….STEELHEAD !  Some lake run Brown trout are still around and some very large resident Rainbow and Brown trout are being caught as well….it’s a buffet !

With both fly gear and light spin tackle, we’re fishing prime early winter “lies” in search of trout and steelhead.   Some of the better steelhead fishing has been in December this year, which is an exception to the norm.  With user friendly gear, both fly and conventional tackle, we’re going to be able to fish well in winter this year……good apparel…….heaters with extra propane tanks…….hungry fish……..it all adds up to some great “winter” fishing this year.

Present water temperature is in the mid to upper 30’s.
