Muskegon River Fishing Report – December 21, 2018 – Newaygo, Michigan

I’ve been tying up a few smaller, “sparrow” fly patterns for both winter trout and steelhead.
The Muskegon river fishing report for December 21, 2108 in the Newaygo, Michigan area is focused on both early winter steelhead and trout fishing.
With the return of more mild weather over the last week+, water levels have come up slightly and water temperatures have remained pretty much the same. Click HERE for the latest in water flow data, including water levels and temperature.
Although our overall fall and early winter steelhead run did not bring a lot of fish into the river, there are fish throughout much of the river system, from Newaygo itself down to the port town of Muskegon. With both fly fishing and light spin tackle equipment, we’re targeting fish in their typical “lies” that they occupy come this time of the year.
Based on current short and long term forecasts, it looks like we’ll have some pretty mild weather over the next week+, which will make for pleasant conditions to fish in. Click HERE for the latest weather forecast.
For those fly fishers looking to down size rods, line and fly size, indicator nymphing right now can produce some nice trout. Fishing smaller caddis, pheasant tail, scud and midge patterns on 5 or 6x tippet, will produce fish.
Present water temperature is in the 35-36 degree range.
