Muskegon River

The Muskegon river near Newaygo MI remains a bit above average levels at this time, but has stabilized the last couple days after erratic fluctuations out of Croton dam the previous handful of days.

Steelhead are still the target species and will be as long as water temperatures hold and the fish are biting.

We’re pursuing them with both fly fishing and light spin tackle rigs.   Longer fly rods such as “switch” rods, are allowing us to effectively fish floats/indicators in softer shoots and runs where fish are holding.  We are still getting into some resident Brown and Rainbow trout each day, as well as the occasional lake run Brown trout.

As water temperatures drop, fish will be dropping back into slower water, but still there to be caught.

With no major weather patterns on the horizon, fishing should remain viable for “December conditions”, through the holidays.

Water temperature came up slightly over the last couple days due to unseasonably warm air temps in the upper 40’s and present water temperature is in the 38-39 degree range.
