Muskegon River Fishing Report – Croton, MI – June 18, 2015

Isonychia fly……Plump fly that trout sip off the surface and FAST swimming nymph that trout LOVE to chase down !
The Muskegon river in Croton, MI is running above average flows at this time due to rains that have come through most of west Michigan over the last near week. With cooler than normal weather for this time of year, the river is maintaining its mid 60’s water temperatures and still producing fish.
Several techniques will produce fish, from indicator nymph fishing runs and tailouts, to pulling streamers in medium depth, medium current runs, swinging soft hackles and other wet flies through riffles and casting dry fly imitations of caddis, sulphurs and BWO’s.
Insect hatch activity has been best late afternoon – dusk. We have not had reliable Gray Drake flights AND spinner falls, so that highly sought after hatch and the fish it brings to the surface, has not been all that great. We’ve been focusing on the other hatches that ARE bringing fish up, caddis and sulphurs, with BWO’s on cloudy days.
With continued cool and somewhat of a wet/damp weather in the forecast, we’re looking forward to seeing how the caddis, sulphur and gray drake dry fly fishing will be over the next week+, along with the inevitable onset of the Isonychia hatches and flights.
Present water temperature in the mid 60’s.
