Muskegon River Fishing Report – August 4, 2020 – Newaygo, Michigan

Brandon, from west Michigan, with a nice and chunky Muskegon river Smallmouth bass caught this morning.
The Muskegon river in and around the Newaygo, Michigan area is running a little above average for this time of early August and has cooled down some due to colder overnight air temperatures as of late.
Recent rains put some good water into tributaries that flow into the Muskegon, so we have some off color water right now and may for a couple days. With both fly fishing and light spin tackle equipment, we’re targeting warm water species of fish such as Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike. Fishing both top water and subsurface “offerings”, we’ve been getting into some pretty nice, much of this has depended on ones willingness to cast tight to structure, which is where some dominant fish have been holding up.
Over the past week-10 days, I have been splitting time between the Muskegon river and the Grand river, in and around the greater Grand Rapids area, as it has been fishing quite good on certain days as well. The next 2 weeks or so of my summer guided fishing, will be done on one river or the other, before packing up the light gear and preparing for the upcoming salmon season, which starts on the lower Pere Marquette river for me, close to the port town of Ludington.
That said, it’s still a bit early for any reliable salmon fishing in the river, so we have some more bass, pike and even the occasional walleye, to fish for in the mean time.
Present water temperatures on the Muskegon read 71 this morning.
