Muskegon River Fishing Report – Smallmouth Bass – Newaygo, MI – August 2, 2016

Dan, from west Michigan, with a nice Smallmouth bass taken earlier today.
The Muskegon river is fishing well for Smallmouth bass right now as we get into the last leg of summer here in west Michigan. We are coming across the occasional Northern pike as well, but those encounters seem to last for just a second or two, before we bring back a line with no lure of fly left !
With both fly fishing and light spin tackle setups, we’re getting Smallmouth with topwater poppers and waking flies/lures, as well as subsurface with crayfish and bait fish imitations, as well as a few crazy looking attractor patterns that I tie or make, that also get fish to bite.
As we get into August, we’ll have some of our better Smallmouth fishing of the summer, as water temperatures rise to their warmest temperature of the year.
Water levels have dropped the last couple days and the Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is presently running below average levels. This can change quickly though with some of the brief, but really intense rains that have some through west Michigan the past week+.
Present water temperature in the 73-74 degree range in the Newaygo area.
