Muskegon River Fishing Report – August 1, 2017 – Newaygo, MI

A Largemouth bass has made its way up the Muskegon river to join his Smallmouth cousins in the Newaygo, MI area.

The Muskegon river fishing report for August 1, 2017 in the Newaygo, MI area is about relaxed, lazy fishing during the “dog days of summer”.  August is historically the best month overall for fishing warm water species such as Smallmouth bass and Northern Pike in rivers of west Michigan.

With fly fishing and light spin tackle equipment, we’re catching mostly Smallmouth bass right now, but depending on which stretch of the Muskegon river we’re fishing, it’s common to cross paths with large, toothy Northern pike here and there, as well as the occasional Walleye.

With water levels still holding pretty good for this time of summer and water temperatures having cooled just a bit in recent days, the Muskegon river is setting up nicely to fish good through the rest of August.

We are venturing to several different stretches of the Muskegon river, from near Big Rapids all the way down to east of Muskegon, as well as the Grand river in the Grand Rapids area, which has finally begun to drop in level and clear up over the last week and fishing good as well.

Present water levels on the Muskegon river in the 1400 cfs range, with normal being around 1200 and water temperature has dropped a bit and has settled around the 71-72 degree mark.
