Muskegon River Fishing Report – April 8, 2018 – Newaygo, Michigan

Mark, from west Michigan, with a great Muskegon river spring steelhead, full of vibrant colors only found on spring time male steelhead.
The Muskegon river fishing report for April 8, 2018 in the Newaygo, Michigan area is about our extended “winter” and onset of our spring steelhead run.
With ‘ol man winter having returned to most of the Midwest, we’re seeing river temperatures staying quite cold for this time of spring and that, coupled with low water levels for this time in April, has the spring steelhead run in a “trickle affect”.
That said, we are finding steelhead in staging areas, as well as around spawning grounds and even finding some spawned out fish in drop back areas.
With both fly fishing and light spin tackle equipment, we’re catching not only spring steelhead, but also resident Brown trout and Rainbow trout, who are starting to congregate around steelhead spawning grounds. This is where trout can find easy meals of loose steelhead and insects that are getting kicked up during the steelhead spawning process.
With warmer weather forecasted for the week ahead, we should see a rise in water temperatures and steelhead getting more active during their annual spawning run up the river.
Present water temperatures are in the 37-38 degree range.
