Muskegon River Fishing Report – April 28, 2019 – Newaygo, Michigan

Scott holds a beautiful Muskegon river steelhead caught the other day on his regular “weigh 3 top fish” contest held semi annually with friends from west Michigan.
The Muskegon river fishing report for April 28, 2019 in the Newaygo, Michigan area is about the continued spring steelhead run.
As river levels drop and temperatures rise, we’re seeing more steelhead come in from lake Michigan on their annual spawning run. We’re also catching resident Brown and Rainbow trout, as well as the occasional Walleye, who are also amidst their annual spawning run. With both fly fishing and conventional equipment, our focus is on fishing select areas of the river that are holding both steelhead and trout. Options for fly fishing include bottom bouncing -aka “chuck and duck” rigs – as well as floating line and indicator setups and swinging or stripping streamers with sinking or sink tip fly lines. Conventional equipment set ups include longer rods and open face spinning reels and similar rods with baitcaster reels, for suspending flies and egg imitations, with floats/bobbers.
Based on the present forecast, we may be in for some rains over the next few days, which may bring river levels up a bit, but we’ll see what mother nature has in store for us. Click HERE for current and forecasted weather for west Michigan in the Muskegon area.
Present flows are in the 3,300 cfs range, with averages being closer to 2,500 and water temperatures close to breaking the 50 degree mark for the first time this spring.
