Muskegon River Fishing Report – April 21, 2021 – Newaygo, Michigan

Dan from Grand Rapids, MI with a nice Muskegon river steelhead.

The Muskegon river fishing report for April 21, 2021 in the Newaygo, Michigan area can be summed up with one word…..drought.

In 24 years of full time guiding, I have never seen the Muskegon river like this EVER in April and close to the lowest flows I have ever seen, which was in late summer.   Click HERE for current Muskegon river water flow data.

The spring steelhead run is still going on, but with much lower numbers of fish than we anticipated, but there is still 2+ weeks of the spring steelhead run “calendar”, which historically goes well into May.

I have suspended guide trips for now until we either see more significant numbers of fish show up, get some rain to bring the river up or both, which would be optimal.  That being said, the forecast doesn’t look real good for a nice few day downpour.  Click HERE for current and forecasted weather for the Newaygo, Michigan area.

What happens over the next week-10 days will determine what steelhead fishing we’ll have through early to mid May.  We’re kind of hostage to Mother Nature right now and she hasn’t been a kind soul over the last 3 months.

Not far off will be the onset of the prime dry fly fishing for resident Brown and Rainbow trout, which typically gets going around the last full week of May and goes well into June.

Should we see improvement in river conditions that allow for more steelhead fishing, I will be back out there and getting in on the last of the spring 2021 steelhead run on the Muskegon river.
