Muskegon River Fishing Report – April 17, 2018 – Newaygo, Michigan

Muskegon river trout and steelhead fishing

Dad Chris holds son Arie’s FIRST steelhead….and a doozie at that !

The Muskegon river fishing report for April 17, 2018 in the Newaygo, Michigan area is about the return of winter !!!…..and the spring steelhead run.

With a very weird spring weather pattern affecting many regions of the northern United States, we’re seeing snow and ice storms dominate the headlines over the last week or so.  As a result, “spring” is kind of on hold for now, but relief is in sight !

All that said, we are into the our spring steelhead season and seeing new fish arrive from lake Michigan on a regular basis right now while they’re into the heart of their annual spawning run.

With both fly fishing and light spin tackle equipment, we’re getting into not only spring steelhead, but also resident Brown and Rainbow trout that are eager to get in on an easy meal of steelhead eggs that are kicked up during the spawning process.

With more cold weather in the immediate forecast, we should see things slowly come back to more typical spring  conditions shortly after, as warmer weather IS on the way.

Present water temperature in the 38-39 degree range.
