Muskegon River Fishing Report – April 12, 2021 – Newaygo, Michigan

Bill got a nice on recently and was overdue since we didn’t have a lot of success last fall on his last steelhead outing.

The Muskegon river fishing report for April 12, 2021 in the Newaygo, Michigan area is focused on the spring steelhead run and resident Brown and Rainbow trout fishing.

With very little precipitation over the last near 3 months, the river is running very low and incredibly clear.  I have not seen these river conditions at any time in the month of April,  in my 24 years of guiding full time on the Muskegon river.

This being said, we do have steelhead in the river on their annual spawning run and we’re finding fish by covering a lot of water on certain days.

The resident Brown and Rainbow trout are actively feeding around the spawning steelhead and you have a chance at catching a great Michigan trout during this time of the steelhead run.

With low and clear water levels, a more stealthy approach will produce better results, but it requires patience in battling fish on lower pound test line.

We’re using both fly fishing and conventional gear setups to fish for both trout and steelhead.

There is not much in the line of rain in the forecast, so we may be dealing with these river conditions through the rest of the 2021 spring steelhead run.

Present water temperature hovering around the 50 degree mark.
