Muskegon River Fishing Report – April 1, 2021 – Newaygo, Michigan
The Muskegon river fishing report for the first of April in the Newaygo, Michigan area is focused on the annual spring steelhead run that’s going on right now and will be for the next month+.
Steelhead are coming into their natal rivers from lake Michigan and the Muskegon river will see them through April and into May. These fish come into the river in groups over the course of several weeks each spring.
This year finds the river running very low and clear and as a result, we’re modifying our tactics to fishing for them by taking a much more stealthy approach. Click HERE for current Muskegon river water flow data.
With no precipitation in the short or long range forecast, it looks like we’ll be fishing in crystal clear water for a while, but hoping that mother nature lends a hand here and gives us a good downpour at some point in April. With both fly fishing and conventional equipment, we’re catching not only migratory steelhead, but also resident Brown and Rainbow trout, who are feasting on the steelhead eggs and insects that get kicked up during the steelhead spawning process.
Although we’re not seeing a large spring steelhead run up to this point, there are some rather large ones in the river, so having a shot at a steelhead pushing 15# is not out of the question !
Current water temperatures in the 43 degree range below Croton dam.
