Muskegon River Fishing Report – January 5, 2018 – Newaygo, MI

Muskegon river steelhead fishing

A nice Muskegon river steelhead, in full “winter colors”.

The Muskegon river fishing report for January 5, 2018 in the Newaygo, MI area is all about the deep freeze we’re in the middle of until Mother Nature loosens her wintery grip on the Midwest.  With sub zero temperatures on several days over the past week+, the river is flowing light slush on some mornings, but this is due to change in the days ahead as we have some warmer weather coming in.

Once temperatures come up a bit, I will be back out on the river in pursuit of both resident Brown and Rainbow trout, as well as Steelhead that are wintering over in the river this year.

With both fly fishing and light spin tackle equipment, we’re putting most of our attention towards slower moving pools and runs.

A key to winter fishing is small and slow…..small flies, egg imitations and light tippet, fished in slower moving water.

Present water temperature in the 34 degree range.
